STAGE

🧭 Lesson Objective

1️⃣ Learn what each window in the Live2D software is for and how it helps in the rigging workflow.

🎯 Lesson Quests

🚩 Quest 1: Create a new model file and explore each window inside the Live2D Cubism interface.

🚩 Quest 1: Live2D Cubism Window Navigation

Before we can rig, we need something to work with — so let’s create a new model file and get familiar with the Live2D interface.

  • Go to File > New > Model
  • Once the file opens, you’ll see the default Live2D workspace

Let’s walk through each section of the interface one by one and break down what they’re for.

⚙️ Live2D Software Options

This is the main top menu bar with tabs like File, Edit, View, and so on.

Each tab includes various options and settings — but don’t worry about memorizing everything now. We’ll introduce features as we need them, so you’re not overwhelmed from the start.

🧩 Parts Window

This window works like a layered folder system for your model. It shows all your Art Meshes, Deformers, and folders.

  • Think of it like the Layers panel in Photoshop or Clip Studio
  • However, there is something that can overwrite this top down layering system. That is: "Draw Order".

🎨 How Draw Order Works:

  • Each art piece is given a Draw Order value (0–1000)
  • Higher numbers appear in front of lower ones
  • If multiple parts share the same draw order, the order in the list (top-to-bottom) decides what’s visible on top

🧠 Example:

  • If the Eyes have a draw order of 600 and the Face has 700, the face will cover the eyes
  • If both have 700, whichever is higher in the Parts Window list will appear on top

Hiding and Locking Layers:

  • 👁️ Hide parts with the eye icon
  • 🔒 Lock parts to avoid accidentally moving them

🌀 Deformer Window

This window shows all the deformers and how they’re organized hierarchically.

  • Deformers help bend, squash, stretch, and animate your model
  • You’ll learn more about how deformers work in Level 1 – Stage 4

For now, just know that this is where they live. You can also hide and lock deformers here, just like in the Parts Window.

🛠️ Tool Details Window

This window changes based on the tool you’re currently using.

  • When you select a tool (like a brush or transform), this area shows you additional options for that tool
  • We’ll cover each tool’s settings as we go

🧰 Tool Bar

This bar contains the most frequently used tools in Live2D.

  • You’ll select tools from here
  • Then use the Tool Details Window to tweak their settings

We’ll go over each tool when we start using them — no need to memorize everything up front.

🧾 Inspector Window

This lets you adjust the properties of selected objects, such as:

  • Art Mesh names
  • Parameter settings
  • Deformer labels

Basically, if you have something selected, this is where you edit its key details.

🎚️ Parameter Window

This is where all your model’s movement data is stored.

  • Parameters control how your model animates
  • You’ll use this window to set keyforms and motion
  • We’ll dive deep into this in Level 1 – Stage 5

For now, just know this is where we will be setting all our movements that change the models position.

🖼️ Workspace Window

This is your main canvas — where your model appears and where all the rigging and animation happens.

  • Hold Space + Left Click to move the canvas around
  • Scroll with your middle mouse wheel to zoom in and out

This is where you’ll spend most of your time!
